The Mississippi State University Extension Service will hold a waste pesticide collection day July 31 in Tunica County for farmers and pesticide applicators in northwest Mississippi.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tunica Gin on Highway 61, 1 mile south of Tunica. There is no fee to participate.
Waste pesticides are leftover, cancelled, suspended or unusable products. Examples include insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and plant growth regulators. Empty pesticide containers will not be accepted.
“The event offers farmers a safe, economical way to get rid of unwanted pesticides,” said Anthony Bland, Tunica County Extension director.
An on-site, licensed, hazardous-waste contractor will dispose of the pesticides at a licensed facility outside Mississippi. The Waste Pesticide Disposal Program is a series of periodic collection events coordinated by Extension and the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce. Funding is made available through the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
