Valent: Inovate System for soybean seed protection

Valent U.S.A. Corporation announced plans to market Inovate System, a state-of-the-art seed-applied insecticide/fungicide for soybeans beginning in January 2010. Company officials said the active ingredients in Inovate are all now EPA approved.

Inovate contains Valent’s clothianidin insecticide (NipsIt INSIDE Insecticide, newly registered for use in soybeans), plus a custom combination of ipconazole and metalaxyl fungicides (Rancona Xxtra Fungicide) from Chemtura Corporation. These three super systemic ingredients provide broad spectrum contact and systemic seed and seedling protection.

“Valent is helping move seed protection to a new level with the Inovate System,” said Glen Karaffa, Valent Seed Protection business manager. “Inovate contains the newest chemistries and provides the broadest spectrum soybean protection available to help growers unlock their seed’s potential for maximum stand, vigor and yield.”

The three active ingredients in the Inovate System protect soybean seeds and seedlings while guarding against diseases and insects throughout the most critical developmental stages. Additionally, the Inovate System features Valent’s proprietary Lock Tight Technology for maximum performance in the field.

The Inovate System targets seed and seedling diseases, including Rhizoctonia damping off, Fusarium seed and seedling dieback, and Pythium seed and seedling decay. Additionally, the system controls a number of insects, including wireworm, seed corn maggot, bean leaf beetle, pea leaf weevil, thrips, leafhoppers and early-season aphids.

Karen Arthur, Valent research and development manager, said the Inovate System handles well in seed plant- and downstream-treating applications and provided strong field performance in research and grower trials.

“Users tell us that trials with Inovate increased stand counts, reduced insect pressure and produced stronger, healthier plants,” Arthur said. “They noticed the beans treated with Inovate had greater stalk circumference and denser root systems than the beans treated with competitive seed treatments. In trials in Missouri, average stand counts in the Inovate plots had from 10,000 to 40,000 more plants per acre than competitive treatments.”

As 2009 yield data continues to be reported, Karaffa said Inovate is performing extremely well in head-to-head testing against the untreated seed and other competitive formulations.

“In addition to higher stand counts in 2009, we are seeing an increase in the number of pods per plants, which we expect will provide additional yield benefits” Karaffa said.

As growers consider their seed protection options for 2010, plantability, environmental and worker safety and performance will be important factors. The built-in polymer in the Inovate System will help increase application efficiency, boost adherence of active ingredients on the seed and reduce dust issues that may be problematic in other seed treatments.

“The Lock Tight Technology in Inovate keeps the formulation where it’s meant to be — on the soybean seed,” Arthur said. “Our seed protection system will provide growers and seed treating operations with a new level of protection and convenience. Lock Tight Technology has been shown to reduce dust, residue and bridging during the application and planting process.”

Inovate will be supported by select distribution with sales and service by both Valent and Chemtura agricultural sales representatives.
