USA RICE Federation President and CEO Ellen Terpstra has been named new administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service.
“Ellen has contributed immensely to the needs of our membership and accomplished much for the U.S. rice industry during her tenure,” said USA Rice Federation Chairman David Van Oss. “Her extensive background in international trade relations, policy and agricultural product promotion served the rice industry well. We commend Secretary Agriculture Ann Veneman's choice for this very important post.”
FAS has primary responsibility for USDA's international activities, including market development, international trade agreements and negotiations and the collection and analysis of market information. FAS also administers USDA's export credit guarantee and international food aid programs, and helps expand income and food availability in developing nations.
“It has been my privilege to work on behalf of the U.S. rice industry the past four years and to work with the outstanding member leadership in the USA Rice Federation,” said Terpstra. “While I hate to leave the rice industry, I have a long-held personal belief that it is important to give back to the agricultural community through government service and feel I can use my experience of nearly 25 years well in the position at FAS. I look forward to working with Secretary Veneman and Under Secretary J.B. Penn.”
Terpstra joined the USA Rice Federation — which represents U.S. rice producers, millers and allied industries — in February 1998.
