The North Mississippi Research and Extension Center, headquartered at Verona, Miss., will hold its annual Row Crops Field Day Aug. 4 at the Lee County AgriCenter on Highway 145 South.
Registration and refreshments begin at 8 a.m. Field tours of the unit's cotton, soybean and corn research will begin at 8:45 a.m.
Cotton stops will highlight research into 15-inch row production; cotton seedling rates; cotton variety blending; the current cotton situation and updates on new technology.
The corn tour will offer growers the opportunity to observe various insect management practices; the production of Roundup Ready corn; soybean/corn production in sod; and the current corn situation.
A highlight of the soybean stop will be the chance to observe the performance of dozens of soybean varieties in Mississippi State University's 2004 soybean variety trial; comparisons of soybean response to foliar fungicides; and soybean variety response to reduced seeding rates.
“In light of the rapid spread of some potentially serious invasive weeds, this year we are devoting a portion of the morning program to identification and management of these weeds, including the much talked about cogongrass. The invasive weed identification and management session will be from 11 a.m. until 11:40 a.m.,” says Joe Street, interim head of NMREC.
Charles Bryson, USDA botanist, and John Byrd, MSU Extension weed scientist, will share information on cogongrass and other weeds on the state's invasive weed list. All landowners, particularly producers with pastures for forage and hay, can benefit from this session.
Following the invasive weed session, participants are invited to a sponsored lunch and updates from Street; Reuben Moore, associate director of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station; and a keynote address by David Waide, president of the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation.
Commercial exhibits also will be set up for viewing and discussion.
