THE METER on the left measures electricity that Will Hegman’s solar array feeds into the power grid, while the meter on the right measures electricity used in his home. For the past year, the solar system offset the power used in the house, plus a small rebate for the excess electricity produced.
POWERED BY 480 photovoltaic modules, the Choctaw Central (Mississippi) High School team’s solar car won the Hunt-Winston Solar Car Challenge race, covering a distance of 853.5 miles in just over 27 hours, at an average speed of 34.73 mph. This earned the team the national championship and a chance to participate in the World Solar Car Race in Australia.
