2011 elections topic of Delta Council event

There will be a special presentation on the outlook of the 2011 Mississippi elections by two noted political commentators — Mississippi political author Jere Nash and Sid Salter of The Clarion Ledger — before the 74th Delta Council Annual Meeting June 12 at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss.

“My friend Haley Barbour has made a profound impact on the political landscape of this state,” said said Delta Council President John Phillips of Holly Bluff, Miss.

“All observers agree Haley will be a key player in every issue and election for many years into the future, but his term-limited departure in 2011 will create political vacuums at all levels of state government that has people already positioning themselves. We hope that the members and guests of Delta Council will join us as Sid and Jere analyze this.”

The 9:15 a.m. presentation — “The Run-up to 2011: After Haley” — on the Delta State University Quadrangle under a tent will be before the 10:30 a.m. start of the Delta Council Annual Meeting in the Bologna Performing Arts Center. U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas will serve as the keynote speaker for the meeting, which will also include the recognition of Deltans for special achievements, a presentation from Delta Council on some key issues facing the region, and the awarding of the Delta’s Top Honor Graduate Scholarship recipient, among other items associated with the regional organization’s business meeting.

The Business Session will be followed by a noon catfish luncheon on the DSU Quadrangle.

The 74th Delta Council Annual Meeting is sponsored by BankPlus, Land Banks of Mississippi, Jimmy Sanders., Inc., and five organizations representing “Voices of Mississippi Agriculture” — Catfish Farmers of Mississippi, Corn Promotion Board, Cotton Incorporated, Rice Promotion Board, and Soybean Promotion Board.
