As flames were burning down a harvested wheat field on May 24 at Allen Byrd Farms in Moon Lake, Miss., heavy wind gusts spun a freakish fire tornado high into the air. Dirt devils are a common site in Delta farm fields, but a fire tornado is an extreme rarity. Charlie Fyfe, Alliance Application Equipment rep, Clarksdale, Miss., was quick to get the scene on camera before the tornado spun out. “I would guess it was about 40 to 50 feet high and probably moving 10 miles per hour,” Fyfe said.
