To combat rice water weevil, Dermacor X-100 has received a state crisis exemption label for use on rice in Arkansas between March 3 and March 17. To explain the exemption and product, Gus Lorenz, Arkansas Extension entomologist, and Chuck Wilson, Arkansas Extension rice specialist, released the following letter:
“As many of you know, we applied for a Section 18 for Dermacor X-100 on rice for rice water weevil for 2009. You may remember that we applied for and were granted a Section 18 for Dermacor last year for rice water weevil. However, last year there was only enough material to treat seed for about 20,000 acres.
“The EPA has not yet granted the Section 18 (for 400,000 acres), but has allowed us to submit a crisis exemption at this time. The crisis exemption will allow processors to treat up to 200,000 acres in a 15-day window, which will allow processors to treat seed while the EPA determines whether or not to grant the Section 18. All seed treated in the 15-day window can be planted regardless of whether or not the Section 18 is granted.
“The time frame for the crisis exemption is March 3 through 17. No one knows whether or not we will get the Section 18 — currently, there are indications that Missouri will get the crisis exemption but not the Section 18. It is (our) opinion that if you want an insecticide seed treatment you should take advantage of what is offered to you during this 15-day crisis exemption.
“Section 18 emergency exemptions were also written for two products for control of grape colaspis in rice. The first was for Cruiser and the second for Nipsit Inside. We have not yet heard anything on these Section 18s. With the difficulty we are having with Dermacor, it makes one wonder how much of a chance these products have of getting a Section 18 for this season.
“Finally, (we) would say that after two years of evaluating these products, we have no doubt these seed treatments have value for rice growers and we will pursue all means to make them available.
“If you choose to have seed treated with Dermacor, we urge you to follow and abide by all the conditions of the crisis exemption and label.”
