LSU AgCenter sugarcane field day July 16

A new sugarcane variety released earlier this year will be featured at the annual sugarcane field day July 16 at the LSU AgCenter’s Sugar Research Station in St. Gabriel, La.
The new variety — L 01-283 — was developed by the LSU AgCenter in cooperation with USDA’s Sugarcane Research Unit in Houma, La., and the American Sugar Cane League in Thibodaux, La.
“L 01-283 has all of the characteristics needed to make this a major player in a grower’s variety program,” said Ben Legendre, LSU AgCenter sugarcane specialist.
The new variety promises “good yield in stubble crops,” Legendre said. “And data show it’s resistant to most all diseases.”
Along with the new varieties, field day visitors touring the research station will have an opportunity to learn about LSU AgCenter research in soil fertility, weed control programs and new products for insect and disease control in sugarcane.
Following field tours, Mike Strain, commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, and Jim Simon, general manager of the American Sugar Cane League, will provide updates on current conditions in the industry. Legendre will provide the latest information on using chemical ripeners with sugarcane.
Registration for the field day will begin at 8 a.m. with field tours starting at 9 a.m.
