LSU AgCenter Rice Field Day July 2 in Crowley

Rice researchers will share details of their ongoing work during the LSU AgCenter Rice Research Station Field Day at Crowley, La., on July 2.
“This is an excellent chance for farmers to talk with scientists about research and to find out about potential varieties and potential new production practices that are being studied,” said Steve Linscombe, director of the Rice Research Station.
The day begins at 7:30 a.m. with field tours that continue until 9:15 a.m. The tours will include presentations by LSU AgCenter rice breeders Linscombe and Xueyan Sha, discussing their projects to develop new varieties; weed control practices by Eric Webster of the LSU AgCenter and Bob Scott, extension weed specialist from the University of Arkansas; disease control and related research by pathologist Don Groth and rice breeder Brooks Blanche, both of the LSU AgCenter.
LSU AgCenter entomologists Mike Stout and Natalie Hummel will discuss rice insect control practices, and agronomists Dustin Harrell of the LSU AgCenter and Tim Walker of Mississippi State University will talk about rice production research.
In addition, a poster session will be held for other researchers to provide information on their work.
The program begins at 10:45 a.m. with speakers that include:
– Jackie Loewer, rice producer and chairman of the Louisiana Rice Research Board, who will give an overview of the board’s activities.
– Kyle McCann, rice commodity director for the Louisiana Farm Bureau, who will give an update on the new farm bill.
– Gene Johnson, LSU AgCenter economist, will discuss rice economics and marketing.
– Bill Richardson, LSU AgCenter chancellor, will make closing remarks.
A lunch will be served after the program.
