Views and visions on Louisiana forestry will be presented at the 2009 Ag Expo Forestry Forum sponsored by the LSU AgCenter in conjunction with the North Louisiana Agri-Business Council. The event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in West Monroe on Jan. 17 starting at 8 a.m.
Speakers will present information on current state and national forestland trends and forest resource opportunities for landowners.
Topics include new economic and legislative issues facing Louisiana landowners, getting the most out of mineral leases, protecting water quality with forestry best management practices in Louisiana, improving pine plantation growth with mid-rotation herbicide release operations, economic trends and the forestry market, new cost-share options for improving plantation timber production and wildlife value with pre-commercial thinning, and how seedling type, subsoiling and planting density influence timber production and land value of a droughty site.
Speakers will come from the LSU AgCenter, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Louisiana Forestry Association, Louisiana Tech University and industry.
Wade Dubea, state forester for the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, will share his vision for the role of the department in meeting the needs of Louisiana forest landowners.
General registration is $15 — or $7 for additional members of the same family — before Jan. 12 with an additional $5 or $3 respectively after that date.
Registration includes refreshments and an admission ticket to Ag Expo in the adjacent Ike Hamilton Expo Center. Ag Expo promotes the agribusiness industry and educates the public on the importance of agriculture.
