Timber tax short course could help save money

A timber tax expert, who has assisted in saving an estimated $12 million in taxes through deductions for participants of her Timber Tax Fundamentals Short Course, will be teaching her tax short course to landowners, foresters and accountants.
The Timber Tax Fundamentals Short Course will be held at the Fordyce Civic Center Oct. 6. Forest landowners, foresters, tax attorneys and other natural resource professionals are invited to attend. Continuing education credit hours will be available to accountants and registered foresters attending the workshop.
Debbie Gaddis, a forestry timber tax specialist at Mississippi State University, will present the program. She presented another program on timber taxes in Fordyce in February.
“Participants indicated on their evaluations that they could save an estimated $436,500 on their taxes, based on the information they learned at the workshop,” said Bobby Hall, Dallas County agent-staff chair with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. They also asked her to return.
Gaddis has presented her course to more than 1,250 participants. In 2006, the National Forest Landowner Association recognized her work, naming Gaddis their Extension Forester of the Year. She will cover such topics as timber tax categories; recordkeeping; recovering costs; reforestation costs; tax treatments of timber sales income; and handling losses.
A $20 registration fee will cover break expenses, lunch and a tax notebook. The meeting is open to interested persons anywhere in Arkansas, but pre-registration is required and can be done by contacting the number below. Payment can be made on the day of the event beginning at 8:30 a.m. The program will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude about 3:30 p.m. The civic center is at Highway 79 and the 167 Bypass.
The workshop is sponsored by the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service and the Ouachita District Forest Education Team (consisting of agents in Bradley, Calhoun, Cleveland and Dallas counties).
