MU South Farm Showcase Sept. 29

The University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station will host the mid-Missouri community at the 2007 South Farm Showcase Sept. 29.
“Thousands of people drive by the farm every day,” said John Poehlmann, AES assistant director. “I’m sure many wonder what we do here. This event will give folks an opportunity to learn about us and see firsthand why South Farm is so vital to the university’s research, teaching, extension and economic development missions.”
Throughout the day, visitors can tour the farm and learn about ongoing MU research on native plants, turfgrass, water quality, agroforestry, alternative fuels and beef. Representatives from two new partners at the farm — the MU Discovery Ridge Research Park and the Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute — will be available to answer questions.
Activities for children include a farm animal petting zoo, a straw bale maze, a sunflower maze, cockroach races and running the bases on the MU “Field of Dreams.”
Other attractions include live music and food vendors. MU experts also will be positioned around the farm and ready to field questions on topics ranging from lawn care and gardening to biodiesel and horse ownership.
The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. The MU South Farm is located on New Haven Road, one-quarter mile east of the AC/Grindstone exit off Highway 63 in southeast Columbia, Mo.
