Field Day at Delta Center July 19

Corn and biodiesel production will be the featured topics at the 2007 Agronomic Crops Field Day held at the Mississippi State University Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) Charles W. Capps Jr. Entrepreneurial Center in Stoneville, Miss., July 19, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Corn production and bioenergy are at the forefront as we decrease our national dependency on foreign oil,” said Joe Street, DREC head. “Our presentations will highlight the Mississippi Delta’s role in the growing sphere of alternative energy production from agronomic crops and other feedstock sources.”
Erick Larson, MSU Extension corn specialist will give an overview of Mississippi corn production in 2007.
Darrell Foreman, project manager for Scott Biodiesel, will speak on biodiesel production. Scott Biodiesel will oversee a 20 million gallon per year biodiesel and glycerin refinery currently under construction in Greenville, Miss.
Feedstocks intended for the refinery include soybeans, catfish oil, poultry fat and other rendered products from the Delta.
Topics also featured at the DREC field day include a Mississippi rice production update, the status of soybean rust in the United States in 2007, the biocontrol of reniform nematodes in cotton, a cotton entomology update, twin-row corn production and cotton yield response to rotation with corn.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Presentations start at 8:30. Rice and soybean presentations will run concurrently with cotton and corn sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15. Lunch will be served from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Field tours will be offered after lunch on an individual basis.

Agricultural production in the Mississippi Delta adds nearly $1 billion to the state’s economy annually. The DREC is a component of MSU’s Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine.
