Rice Research Station field day June 28

The June 28 field day at the LSU AgCenter’s Rice Research Station, Crowley, La., will offer updates from the field, Capitol Hill and the marketplace.
The event begins at 7:30 a.m. and continues through lunch at the research station.
Field tours start at 7:30 a.m. and will include overviews of the station’s rice breeding program, as well as research on the control of weeds, diseases and insects. Those tours also will cover research projects with soybean and rice production and development of a line of rice with enhanced protein levels. The last tour will start no later than 9:15 a.m.
A poster session highlighting research and agricultural products will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
Johnny Saichuk, LSU AgCenter rice specialist, will be available to answer farmer’s questions about their crops. Farmers who have questions related to diseases, insects or weeds should bring samples, he said.
The indoor program starts at 10:45 a.m. with a review of Louisiana Rice Research Board activities by board vice chairman Jackie Loewer. He will be followed by Johnny Broussard, USA Rice Federation legislative affairs director, who will give an update on the latest developments in Congress related to the farm bill and how it could affect rice farmers.
Mike Salassi, LSU AgCenter economist, will discuss rice economics. The event will conclude with remarks from Bill Richardson, LSU AgCenter chancellor.
