Soybean rust expert to address seminar at Farm & Gin Show

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Monte Miles, nationally known Asian soybean rust expert, will provide the latest updates on the progression of the soybean disease into the United States at a special multi-state seminar Saturday, March 5, at the Mid-South Farm & Gin Show at Memphis.

The seminar will be at 1 p.m. in the Steamboat Room on the mezzanine level of the Cook Convention Center.

Miles, with USDA’s Agriculture Research Service, will have recently returned from South America, where he and his staff were investigating Asian soybean rust, according to Tim Price, manager of the show and executive vice president of the Southern Cotton Ginners Association. State soybean specialists, industry representatives, and consultants are also slated to provide comments during the seminar.

“This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for farmers attending the Mid-South Farm & Gin Show to hear the latest available information on this disease, which American farmers may have to face this year,” says Price.

“Dr. Miles is the leading U.S. authority on Asian soybean rust and his recent travels to South America to see first-hand the impact of this disease will provide invaluable information to farmers. We will also have available representatives from all facets of the industry to provide insight on what growers may face if the disease should recur this year.”

The seminar speakers, industry representatives, consultants, and specialists will be available following the session for one-on-one discussions with farmers. Included will be plant pathologists and soybean specialists from the Mid-South, and representatives from most major input companies that have crop protection products for soybean rust. Educational material from the United Soybean Board will also be available.

The seminar is being presented as a service to growers by the 53rd Mid-South Farm and Gin Show, one of the nation’s largest farm shows, which features over 400 exhibitors including the latest technology in agricultural products, equipment and services.

Admission to the show and seminar are free, but registration is required for show and seminar attendance.
