Monsanto expands residual incentives program for 2012

The platform serves as a resource for recommendations on weed management in Roundup Ready crops and offers incentives to farmers for using multiple modes of action in their weed control systems.

Southern soybean and cotton producers will have more choices for managing weeds and earning financial incentives under a program announced this fall.

Six companies are now participating in the Roundup Ready Plus Weed Management Solutions Platform — Syngenta AG, FMC Corp., Makhteshim Agan of North America (MANA), Valent, Willmar Fabrication and Monsanto.

The platform serves as a resource for recommendations on weed management in Roundup Ready crops and offers incentives to farmers for using multiple modes of action in their weed control systems.

Incentives increase up to $22 per acre in cotton for 2012.

Southern soybean farmers can receive up to $10 per acre in incentives under the 2012 platform.

Farmers attending the announcement of the 2012 program addressed the changes they’ve made in their weed control programs over the last few years.

“I’ve been farming for seven years,” said Mississippi producer Gary Bailey. “The past two years, I’ve found out what farming is all about. I’ve done a lot of direct spraying.”

Bailey says he’s used Gramoxone and Valor “under the hoods and we’ve gotten some good coverage. But the real problem is getting in the drill.”

Arkansas farmer Danny Finch said, “We recognized our problem with resistant weeds in 2009. In 2010, we realized we needed to address the problem. We started attending meetings and realized that the way to go was to start overlapping residuals. If there was one product that helped me keep my fields clean, it was Reflex, pre-emergence.”

“Roundup Ready PLUS continues to improve based on academic recommendations and farmer experience,” added Chris Reat, Roundup marketing manager.

“This season, we’re adding more choices and increasing the total dollar amount per acre a famer can receive. Most importantly, Roundup Ready Plus continues to represent a sustainable, effective and economical weed control strategy supported by many industry academics.”

Each of the industry partners supply important products to the Roundup Ready Plus platform including residual herbicides, contact herbicides and hooded sprayers.
