The 2009 Jackson County Extension Service Field Day will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at the Newport Research Station. The event’s speakers will begin at 10 a.m.

Lunch will be served.

Topics to be covered and those speaking:

• Soybean, corn, and grain sorghum disease research with Scott Monfort, Arkansas Extension plant pathologist. Monfort will discuss his disease nursery and fungicide research. He will also have on hand examples of several diseases to help everyone develop disease identification skills. He will also give the latest information regarding Asian soybean rust in the state.

• Rice disease monitoring plots and nitrogen research with Chuck Wilson, Arkansas Extension rice specialist. Wilson will discuss the varieties and potential new varieties in both the conventional and Clearfield rice disease monitoring plots. He will also discuss the validation study for the new Nitrogen Soil Test for Rice method.

• Palmer pigweed control in soybeans with Bob Scott, Arkansas Extension weed specialist. Scott will discuss Palmer pigweed control in soybeans in the face of the increasing numbers of glyphosate-resistant populations. His research includes Liberty Link soybeans, residual herbicides, conventional herbicides, salvage situations, etc. He will discuss resistance management in general and the importance of trying to save all weed control technologies, including the Roundup Ready technology.

• Wheat economics and production update with Scott Stiles, Arkansas Extension economist, and Jason Kelley, Arkansas Extension wheat specialist.
