Council seeks help for cottonseed

IN A resolution at its board of directors meeting earlier this year, the Delta Council urged Congress to establish a permanent law providing income and price stabilization to the cottonseed industry.
It also suggested that the National Cotton Council develop “a consensus-based approach to establish policy proposals for the implementation and administration of such a program.”
Without the price stabilization provided by Congress for the 1999, 2000, and 2001 crop seasons, “the infrastructure of the cotton industry would have been severely jeopardized, and huge debt would have been incurred by cotton ginning and cottonseed crushing operations,” the resolution noted.
With regard to future bio-energy policies of the federal government, the council also requested that an analysis be done on the market impacts that biofuels production and the byproducts generated would have on the whole seed and crushed market for cottonseed.
