Forage research and the importance of protein for dairy cattle will be highlighted at the LSU AgCenter dairy field day Dec. 8 at the Southeast Research Station in Franklinton, La.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. with field tours and presentations from AgCenter researchers starting at 10 a.m., according to Mike McCormick, coordinator of the station.

Vinicius Moreira, assistant professor and nutrition expert, will discuss protein supplements for lactating dairy cows. Kun-Jun Han, assistant professor and forage expert, will present the latest findings from his research including summer annuals, winter annuals, organic fertilizers and biofuel forages.

In addition, North Carolina State University grazing specialist Steve Washburn will discuss successful pasture-based dairying, and McCormick will present findings of his research on soy hulls versus rice bran for Holstein steers grazing on ryegrass pastures.

The field day will conclude with a barbecue lunch. After lunch visitors can view the dairy facilities and forage lab, solar-panel electric fencing for pasture grazing control, equipment displays and the dairy lagoon floating island research.
