JOHN J. ZIOLKOWSKI has been promoted to the position of majority staff director for the Senate Agriculture Committee, according to Thad Cochran, R-Miss., committee chairman. Ziolkowski, a 30-year trade and foreign policy advisor, began his Senate career in 1986 with the Committee on Foreign Relations and in subsequent years worked for Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., and Republican Leader Robert Dole, R-Kan.

He has specialized in agricultural trade policy for Cochran since March.

Ziolkowski's government service also spans six years as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State, six years with the House Appropriations Committee, and as confidential assistant to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman during the transition between the Clinton and Bush administrations.

Thomas Hunt Shipman, the majority staff director since Cochran became committee chairman in January 2002, recently accepted a position with the National Food Processors Association as executive vice president of government affairs and communications.

“I congratulate John Ziolkowski and Hunt Shipman on their new responsibilities,” said Cochran.
