The debt ceiling compromise passed by Congress and signed by the president in early August creates a Select or “Super” Committee charged with reducing the federal debt. Only one member – Sen. Max Baucus of Montana – has any experience in agriculture, but the committee could very well write the next farm bill when it decides on spending priorities for the next 10 years. Joe Shultz, senior economist with the Senate Ag Committee, discussed the impact the super committee could have when he spoke to the American Cotton Producers/ Cotton Foundation meeting in Corpus Christi, Texas.
