Yields for Ghana’s production of cocoa had been stagnant for years when John Kufuor’s government took office. Then-president Kufuor increased the price farmers were receiving for cocoa and then worked to help them improve agronomic practices. As a result, cocoa production tripled and Ghana’s poverty rate fell and hunger problems eased. Kufuor described the government’s actions in a press briefing at this year’s World Food Prize event.
