Continental Products of Mexico, Mo., has announced a collection and recycling program for its DuraPipe lay-flat irrigation tubing. In the program, collection is free of charge to farmers and dealers in the Mississippi Delta for DuraPipe purchased in 2003.
Unlike current poly tubing collection programs available at dealer sites, Continental will pick up used DuraPipe directly at individual farm locations. The collected lay-flat tubing will be recycled into lower quality plastic products.
According to Carl Fuemmeler, president, “Dealers are tired of piling up dirty pipe next to their stores and farmers find it hard to transport it there. A large pile of pipe is not only an eye sore, it can be a health risk. Pools of stagnant water in and around the pipe can attract mosquitoes.”
In Continental's collection program, farmers can choose from two options. Continental will collect a minimum of 50 DuraPipe rolls from each location, or if farmers would rather dispose of the pipe themselves, Continental will pay farmers $5 per roll to help them offset the cost of disposal.
To qualify for the collection and recycling program, farmers must have a collection certificate and a purchase receipt from their local dealer. The free collection program applies to DuraPipe purchased in 2003.
At the end of the season, farmers will need to roll up the used DuraPipe and put it in a single location that is accessible by a large truck. “It's an easy program to participate in,” noted Fuemmeler. “We've set up dates for farmers to sign up and for the actual collection of the DuraPipe. To get all the specifics, a farmer can contact a local dealer or call us at 800-325-0216.”
