New drift reduction technologies on display at Farm Progress Show


Most farmers have heard the latest herbicide-resistant corn and soybean traits won’t be available until 2015. But both Dow AgroSciences and Monsanto are using every opportunity to show growers how to make the best use of the new tools. Dow AgroScience’s David Hillger spoke to hundreds of growers about the drift reduction strategy behind Dow’s new Colex-D technology at the Farm Progress Show.

Both Dow AgroScience's Colex-D and Monsanto's Roundup Ready Extend technologies will feature new formulations of the herbicides that can be applied over-the-top of crops containing the traits that make them resistant to either 2,4-D or dicamba. The technologies also will require the use of drift reduction nozzles to help prevent off-target movement of those compounds.

Hillger, one of a cadre of new specialists Dow AgroSciences has named to work with growers on the new Enlist Duo herbicide, uses a display with different spray tips and special lighting to demonstrate how changing the tips can increase droplet size and reduce the number of "fines" that can go into the air and be picked up by wind currents. At some point, however, the droplets become so big that coverage of the target crop becomes an issue.

Then he sprays a compound that mimics the new 2,4-D formulation Dow AgroSciences is developing to show how a combination of the new formulation and new drift reduction nozzles can combine to reduce off-target drift by more than 90 percent.

As required by USDA, Dow AgroSciences and Monsanto are now preparing environmental impact statements or EIS on the potential uses of their new technologies. Both companies hope to complete those in time to launch new products in corn and soybeans in 2015 and in cotton and selected other crops in 2016.
