Economic meeting to focus on ag policy

Shipman, a former deputy undersecretary of agriculture for farm and foreign agriculture services, will be the featured speaker at the Mississippi Agricultural Economics Association’s annual meeting, which will begin at 9:00am in the Bost Auditorium on the Starkville campus.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “The Changing Face of Agricultural and Rural Policy.”

Also on the agenda is Marc Curtis, a farmer and vice president of the National Association of Conservation Districts, who will speak on the changing role of environmental policy in agriculture, and specifically the conservation component of the 2002 farm bill.

Alan Barefield of the Southern Rural Development Center will speak on the rural component of the farm bill and how rural policy will likely interface with farm policy in the future.

In addition, Keith Coble with the MSU Department of Agricultural Economics will talk about the relationship between hedging and counter-cyclical payments.
